Why would I pick rotary over digital here?

Simplicity, and one less thing to fail in a working vehicle. A knob is obvious to anyone who climbs in, survives cold hands and gloves, and needs no explaining. If you want the heater holding a set temperature while you sleep or work, take the digital instead.

Can I duct it to more than one area?

Yes, and on an output this size you should, or the room with the outlet cooks while the far end stays cold. Split the ducting to two or three outlets, keep the runs short and the bends gentle, and lag the duct where it passes through cold lockers.

What goes wrong with these in the bush?

Fuel and airflow, nearly every time. Dirty diesel blocks the pump, a blocked or looped exhaust traps condensate, and dust chokes the combustion air intake on corrugated roads. None of that is exotic to fix, but all of it is easier to prevent than to diagnose at a free camp.
