Family Tents

As a rule of thumb, go one person above your actual group size. A tent listed as "6-person" is genuinely comfortable for four adults with gear, not six. For a family of five, look at an 8-person model. Equally important is peak height — a tent you can stand up in makes dressing, packing, and early-morning routines far less frustrating. Check floor dimensions carefully: a large quoted capacity in a low-roof tunnel tent gives very different usable space than a tall cabin-style design with the same person rating.

Dome tents are freestanding — the poles form a self-supporting structure without staking — making them easy to pitch solo and stable in wind. They're a great all-round choice. Tunnel tents are longer and narrower with parallel hoop poles; they're not freestanding but maximise internal space and often include separate sleeping rooms and a covered living area. For car-camping families who want room to move around, a multi-room tunnel or semi-geodesic design is usually worth the slightly longer pitch time.

Hydrostatic head (HH) measures how much water pressure the fabric withstands before leaking. For Australian conditions — where a summer storm can arrive with little warning — look for at least 3,000mm HH on the flysheet and 6,000mm on the groundsheet (the ground exerts more pressure from body weight). Budget tents often rate at 1,500–2,000mm, which will let through water in a sustained downpour. Quality family tents from Vango and Nortent start from 4,000mm and above, giving genuine confidence in wet weather.

Many do — look for tents described with a "porch", "vestibule", or "living room" area. This covered section sits between the sleeping pod and the outside, giving you somewhere to store muddy boots, set up a camp table, or sit out of the rain without closing yourself inside the bedroom. For families camping in tropical or coastal areas where afternoon showers are common, a covered living area is one of the most-used features of a good family tent.

Entry-level family tents ($150–$350) suit occasional fair-weather camping on powered sites. Mid-range ($350–$800) is the sweet spot for most families — you get genuine weatherproofing, durable poles, and a design that holds up to regular use. Premium tents ($800+) from brands like Vango, Nortent, and Ferrino are expedition-grade products built to last a decade or more and perform in serious conditions. If you camp several times a year or venture into remote areas, investing in a quality tent pays off quickly compared to replacing a cheap model every few seasons.

Heat and insects are your main challenges in an Australian summer. Look for: full mesh inner panels that allow airflow while keeping bugs out; a flysheet that extends close to the ground but still vents through adjustable panels; a large covered porch for shade; and UV-resistant fabric — many budget tents fade quickly in Australian sun. Peak height matters even more in summer — a cramped tent becomes unbearably hot. Light-coloured flysheets also absorb less radiant heat than dark ones.

Condensation forms when warm, moist air from breathing hits the cooler tent fabric — it's normal, not a sign of a leaky tent. To minimise it: pitch the inner tent with the flysheet creating an airspace between both layers; open vents slightly even in cool weather; avoid cooking inside the tent; and choose a campsite with airflow rather than a low-lying hollow. Double-wall tents manage condensation far better than single-wall designs. Wiping down the inner walls in the morning before packing also helps protect the fabric long-term.

Never pack a tent away wet — mould and mildew will destroy the fabric and waterproof coating. If you can't dry it in the field, hang it at home as soon as you return. Clean mud and debris with a soft cloth and mild soap — never use detergent or machine wash. Check poles for cracks and repair any kinks before storage. Re-seam-seal the floor and fly once a year if you camp regularly. Store the tent loosely rather than tightly stuffed in its stuff sack — repeated compression damages the waterproof coating over time.
