What does vertical surface mounting mean for where it goes?

It screws to an upright face, a bulkhead, cabin side, console cheek or the inside of a caravan annexe wall, not flat on a deck or a table top. The holder itself stays level while the mounting plate sits vertical, so check you have flat wall to work with.

Will a stubby cooler or a big travel mug sit in it?

Measure your usual cup against the ring before you drill any holes. A can or a stubby in a cooler sits low and stays put; tall travel mugs and wide tumblers stand proud of the ring and will tip out the first time the boat rolls or the van goes over a gutter.

Is stainless worth it for a drink holder?
