Will it fit my rail?

Check the tube diameter first, because no rail size is listed for this and rail mounts only clamp over a narrow range. Boat rails, bimini tubes and tinnie side rails are not all the same. Measure the outside diameter before ordering rather than after it arrives.

Will a can or a travel mug actually stay in it?

A standard can or stubby sits fine. A tall insulated mug with a handle is a different shape and may sit high and tip in a chop. If you drink from a big tumbler, check the internal diameter of the holder against it before you commit.

Why stainless for something as simple as a drink holder?

Because a plastic holder on a rail in the Australian sun goes chalky and brittle, then snaps at the clamp. Stainless keeps clamping pressure on the tube for years and does not go soft. It will pick up surface staining near the surf, which a rinse sorts out.
