Common questions

Is a full tube better than a slimline or wire holder?

For load, yes. A tube supports the rod butt along its length rather than at a couple of points, so strain from a big fish or a hard troll spreads out instead of concentrating. The trade is bulk on the gunnel and a bigger hole to cut.

Do I need a drain in the bottom?

If it's mounted upright outside, yes. A tube collects rain, spray and fish blood, and a rod butt sitting in that soup all week rots cork and corrodes reel feet. Either drill a drain at the base or tip the boat's cover so water can't pool in there.

Can I mount it through a hollow gunnel?

Not without backing it. Tap the underside first — a drummy sound means thin skin and no core to hold a fastener. Cut an access hatch, fit a plate behind, then bolt through with sealant. A tube holder torn out under load takes a chunk of gunnel with it.
