It hangs off the side of a gunnel or coaming rather than sitting on top of it. That's the answer for a tinnie or a boat with narrow side decks where there's no flat real estate to bolt to. You do need clear space behind for the backing hardware.
Not if you use the angles. The outer tubes are splayed so rods fan away from each other, which is the whole reason for a three-way. Trouble starts when you load all three on the same side of the boat — spread them across both gunnels when drifting.
Access to the back of the panel, a backing plate, marine polyurethane sealant and 316 fasteners. Three loaded rods pull hard on one mount, so washers alone won't do. If your gunnel sounds hollow when you tap it, plan on an inspection hatch before you drill anything.
