How do I make sure this is the right part for my Ibis?

Match the part number, not the model name. This one suits the Ibis 4, also badged MK4, plus the Ibis Lite and Ibis Plus. Earlier Ibis units are a different animal. Get up on the roof, read the data label on the unit itself, and check it against 10-01-JFSA116Z2201A before committing.

Why do rooftop compressors fail in the first place?

Heat and voltage, mostly. A coil packed with dust and wool makes the compressor work far harder than it should, and sagging voltage at a busy park, often through a long or joined lead, is brutal on start-up. Hose the fins out each season and use one good lead, not two joined.

Is it something I can get onto the roof myself?

The part is about 9kg, which is a one-handed lift on the ground and an awkward one on a ladder. The bigger issue is standing on a van roof at all. Most panels need boards to spread your weight. Leave the roof work to the tech who is doing the refrigerant side.
