How do I know the cooling unit is the problem?

The tell-tales are a yellow stain down the back of the fridge, a sharp ammonia smell, or a fridge that will not cool on gas, 12V or 240V. If it fails on one power mode only, the fault is in that circuit, not in the cooling unit.

Can I fit it myself in the driveway?

Not sensibly. It is a 32 kg assembly pre-charged with ammonia, and handling it wrong is both dangerous and a good way to ruin a new part. A refrigeration or caravan technician who knows absorption units should do the swap and the recommissioning.

Does replacing the cooling unit make sense on an older van?

It does when the cabinet, door and controls are sound, because this restores cooling on all three modes without touching the joinery. It fits the original RM4805 mounting points, so there is no cabinet rework. A fridge with a tired cabinet is a different conversation.
