Will it run off a generator or my battery bank?

Better than an old rooftop will. The inverter keeps start-up under 6.9A, so there is no big surge slamming a small generator or an inverter the moment the compressor kicks in. Running all night off batteries is still a big ask, but a few hours in the afternoon is realistic.

Is 2.5kW enough for my van?

It is matched to vans up to 6m. Put it on something longer and it will run flat out on a stinking hot day without ever quite catching up, which is hard on the unit and noisy with it. Insulation, window covers and where you park matter almost as much as capacity.

How does the heating compare with a diesel heater?
