How do I know it is the control unit and not the compressor?

The usual sign is a fridge that powers up and does nothing — no cooling, no compressor noise. A failing compressor tends to try to start and cut out. Before you condemn either, check the supply voltage at the fridge, because low voltage produces the same symptom.

Will it fit where the old one came out?

It keeps the same 110 x 90 x 50 mm form factor as the superseded units, so it drops into the existing bracket without cutting or drilling. Photograph the wiring before you unplug anything — the connections are straightforward, but memory is not.

Is this a job I can do myself?

Generally yes, because swapping the control unit does not open the sealed refrigerant circuit. It is a 320 g electrical part that unplugs and re-plugs into the same mount.
