It lets the pin sit square to the pull instead of in line with it, so a strop, sail slide or block can hang the way it wants to without twisting the line. Handy anywhere a flat fitting and a rope or chain meet at an awkward angle.
Forging works the grain of the steel around the shape instead of pouring it, so you get a tougher body that bends before it lets go. Cast fittings can be fine, but they fail suddenly when they do fail. For anything taking shock loading, forged is the safer bet.
Salt sitting in the gap between pin and body starves that spot of oxygen, and 316 needs oxygen to keep its protective skin intact. Hose it with fresh water, work the pin occasionally so it does not seize, and the brown staining stays cosmetic.
