Common questions

Will this hinge rust if I fit it on a coastal boat?

You will likely see a brown bloom on the surface within a season or two. That is salt sitting on the steel, not the part failing. Rinse it with fresh water after every trip and give it a polish, and the 316 underneath stays sound.

What is the difference between a butt hinge and a deck hinge here?

A butt hinge mounts across a join, half a leaf on the lid and half on the frame, so the two faces sit flush when closed. A deck hinge is designed to carry a frame or strut off a horizontal surface. Different jobs entirely.

Anything to watch when I bolt it down?

Bed it on marine sealant rather than bolting metal straight onto a damp surface. Trapped salt water with no air gets under the leaves and eats stainless from the inside out. On an alloy boat, use an isolating compound so the hull is not sacrificed to the fastener.
