Frank Marine
It drops flat when nothing is pulling on it, which is the whole reason to choose one over a fixed pad eye. On a deck or a ute tray it means no snagging and no shin damage. It also means it needs to be flicked up before you can clip on.
No, and this catches people out. A folded pad eye is lying against its base with nothing supporting the eye, so a load applied flat bends the arm instead of pulling on it. Make sure it has swung up into line with the pull before you tension anything.
At the hinge pin, every time. That is the part carrying the whole load through a small pivot and the part where salt and grit collect. Rinse it, keep it moving, and look at the pin when you inspect rather than the shiny plate that always looks fine.
