Common questions about SS316 3-Way Adjustable Rod Holder

How does this differ from the rail-mount version?

This one is the through-bolt holder rather than the rail clamp. It fits flat to a gunnel, coaming or transom and stays put permanently. If you do not want to drill holes in your boat, the rail-mounted version is the one to look at.

Do I need a backing plate?

On fibreglass or thin alloy, yes. A hooked fish loads a rod holder hard and the fasteners will pull through or craze the gel coat without something spreading the load. Large fender washers work; an alloy or stainless plate under the gunnel works better.

Stainless bolted to an aluminium tinnie — is that a problem?

It can be. Stainless against bare aluminium in saltwater sets up galvanic corrosion, and the alloy is the side that suffers. Isolate the two with nylon washers or a barrier compound on the fasteners, and rinse the area down after saltwater trips.
