Each stroke drags less line but takes noticeably less muscle, which is exactly what you want while the boat is still heavy in the water. The trade is more turns of the handle for the same distance. Loading alone on a sloping ramp, that swap is worth making.
If the trailer lives outside near salt air, yes. Sun and salt are what finish webbing and seize a pawl, and the drum cover keeps both off the line between trips. If the rig is garaged and you rinse everything after each launch, you can go without.
Not this one. A ratchet pawl holds the drum between strokes, but it gives you no controlled way down — release under load and you are trusting the pawl alone. For anything that has to be lowered as well as hauled, use a brake winch instead.
