Why will my normal wheel brace not reach the nuts?

Alloy wheels sink the nuts into deep recesses, and a standard socket wall is too thick to drop in beside them. A thin-walled socket clears the recess. If you have ever rounded a nut trying to get purchase at the top of the hole, that is why.

How do I know my van uses 19mm or 21mm nuts?

Most caravan and trailer nuts fall into one of those, which is why the socket is double-ended. Check with a spanner in the driveway rather than finding out on the gravel. If yours are neither, this will not help and you want a socket in your size.

Is the extra leverage a good thing when tightening?

For undoing, yes — 200mm of extra handle breaks nuts loose that would otherwise beat you. Going back on, it is easy to over-tighten and stretch a stud. Nip them up firmly by hand, then check with a torque wrench when you get somewhere you can.
