Solid state or proportional, which one suits me?

If your towing is mostly highway and the van is a steady weight, a solid-state controller like this one is set and forget, and mounting it at any angle is a genuine advantage. If you tow heavy through hills and traffic, a proportional unit feels smoother under hard braking.

Where should it go in the cab?

Within easy reach of your left hand and where you can read the display without hunting for it. There is no levelling to worry about, so the angle is entirely up to you. Avoid the knee strike zone and anywhere a passenger's bag will knock it.

Do I need a special harness, or can it be wired in?

Either. On a vehicle with a Smart Click plug it is a plug-in job, otherwise it wires in on the traditional four connections. If you are wiring it yourself, get the brake light feed right, because that is the one people get wrong and brakes then apply late.
