How do I work out whether I need a drop or a rise?

Measure the coupling height with the van sitting level, then measure your hitch receiver with the tow vehicle loaded for the trip. If the coupling sits lower than the receiver, you need drop, and 95mm of it suits a high ute or wagon pulling a lower van.

Does the 4500kg rating mean I can tow 4500kg?

No. Your towing limit is the lowest number in the chain: vehicle, towbar, coupling, tyres and the shank. This one is rated to 4500kg so it will not be the weak link on a heavy van, but the plate on your towbar and the handbook set the limit.

Will it work with any weight distribution head?

It is built around the Hayman Reese 70206 head, so check yours before you order. Heads differ in how they clamp and where the pin holes sit, and a shank that almost fits is worse than none: the head moves under load on the first corrugations.
