What does a four-way corner do that a plain elbow cannot?

It joins tube coming from four directions at one corner, two rails, an upright and a brace, so you can build a box frame without welding. On a bimini or a rack that means the corner takes the twist instead of the tube. Everything must be 25mm.

Is 25mm the same as one inch?

Close enough that they are sold as the same thing here, but tube from different makers still varies by a fraction. That fraction is the difference between a corner that slides on snug and one that rattles. Measure the outside of your own tube before you commit to a frame design.

Will a frame built from these fittings handle a windy night?

A bolted frame flexes where a welded one does not, and every corner fitting is a place that flex concentrates. Build it braced, keep the spans short, and drop the canvas when the wind comes up. Frames rarely fail at the tube, they fail at the corners.
