Both ends carry their own antenna, which is what keeps the picture steady over the length of a van and trailer. Mount the camera high with a clear line back to the monitor and keep metal out of the path. Expect a brief lag while it picks up the signal.
It lets you hear what is behind you, so a spotter can talk you back into a tight site without shouting or hand signals you cannot read in a mirror. It also picks up scraping or rattling from the rear that you would never hear from the driver's seat.
Leave it running. The most useful time is on the highway, watching traffic stack up behind you and knowing when it is clear to pull back in. Reversing is the smaller half of the job. Wire the monitor so it powers up with the ignition, not the reverse light.
