My picture keeps dropping out, is the antenna the first thing to change?

Check the easy things first. A loose antenna, a cracked base or one snapped off by a branch will cut range badly, and you can see all of that from the ladder. If the antenna is intact and seated, look at the camera supply and the monitor instead.

Can I fit a bigger aftermarket antenna for more range?

Not a good idea. The camera is tuned around the antenna it comes with, and a random high-gain stick can upset the link rather than extend it. If range is your problem, move the monitor forward in the cab and clear the path between the two ends.

Is it a hard swap up on the roof?

It is a screw-on fitting, so the work itself takes a minute. The care goes into the sealant around the camera base. Break that seal getting the old antenna off and you have a water path into the rear wall. Reseal properly and check after the first rain.
