Can I hardwire this instead of using the cigarette socket?

The plug is what makes it easy, and most people keep it. If you want the monitor wired in permanently, have the plug end replaced with a fused tap to an accessory circuit that only lives with the ignition on, so the monitor cannot flatten the vehicle battery.

The monitor keeps cutting out over bumps, cable or socket?

Usually the socket. Cigarette sockets in older utes and wagons go loose, and the plug rocks just enough to break contact. Try the cable in another socket before you replace anything. If it drops out everywhere, the cable or the fuse inside the plug is the suspect.

Is a generic power lead the same thing?

Careful, because the tip size, the polarity and the fuse rating all have to match, and a lead that physically fits can still cook a monitor. This one is made for the Vision S monitor, which takes the guesswork out of a part you buy under pressure.
