They give the cable a proper home at the hitch, so unplugging when you unhitch takes a second rather than a fiddle behind the drawbar. Without them people leave a lead dangling or tuck it somewhere it gets pinched by the jockey wheel. Mount them where the curly cord has slack on turns.
Wired gives you a picture that does not stutter, and the whole design here assumes a tow vehicle and a van that separate. The work is in the cable run: down the van, along the drawbar, then up through the tug. Budget a day and plan the route before you pull a single trim panel.
High and central is the usual call: it sees over the spare wheel and gives you perspective when reversing. Mount it under a lip or an overhang if you can, because a lens out in the open collects road film and rain spots and you will be wiping it at every stop.
