Will it wash off if the gear gets dunked?

No, and that is the main reason boaties reach for it over a petroleum spray. MX3 stays active when submerged, so a coated winch, bearing buddy or electrical plug keeps working after a ramp dunking or a week of salt spray on the bow.

Should I use this or a lanolin spray on my trailer?

Use MX3 on moving parts and anything electrical. It penetrates and pushes water out, which is what a seized winch, a stiff hinge or a wet trailer plug needs. Bare frame steel heading into long storage is better served by a stickier lanolin coating.

Does it leave a greasy film that grabs dust?

It leaves a light film rather than a wet coat, so it is fine on reels and hinges, but any lubricant picks up dust on a gravel track. Wipe the excess off exposed surfaces after it has crept in, and reapply after a wash rather than layering it on.
