The trailer brakes come on in step with how hard you are braking, instead of a fixed amount every time. In practice that means no lurch at low speed pulling into a servo, and real braking behind you when you stand on it coming down a range.
Through the dial you mount within reach, which is all you ever see of it. Set the gain on a quiet stretch by braking gently from low speed and winding it up until the van pulls the car up without locking its wheels, then leave it for that load.
Setting a minimum braking force, so the van is already doing its share the instant you touch the pedal. It earns its keep on a heavy van and on wet descents. Wind it too high and you will feel the van grabbing in stop-start traffic, so go gradually.
