Because an AKS stability coupling needs clearance a standard ball does not give it. The high-rise shank lifts the ball clear of the towbar tongue so the coupling body and its handle can move through their full travel without fouling. Run a standard ball and you can jam the handle.
No. A friction stability coupling works by gripping the ball, so grease is the one thing that stops it doing its job. Clean the ball back to bare metal with a solvent before the first tow and keep it that way. If it looks shiny and dry, it is right.
It is a 50mm ball on a high-rise shank, so it bolts to a standard tongue, but check the hole size and the shank length against your tongue thickness before you tow. Also check your ball weight still sits within the towbar rating, because raising the ball does not change that.
