Common questions

Is the static capacity the same as my van's weight?

No, and this is where people get caught. The figure to compare is ball weight, the load sitting on the coupling when the van is loaded, not the van's ATM. Weigh the drawbar rather than guessing, because a heavy front boot with two gas bottles adds up fast.

Solid tyre or pneumatic?

Solid wins on maintenance and loses on soft ground. It will never go flat, never need pumping and never rot sitting in the sun for a season. What it will do is dig in on sand and wet grass where an air-filled tyre floats, so carry a pad if you free camp.

Do I need the swivel version instead?

Only if you want to swing the wheel aside without unclamping it. This fixed clamp holds the shaft in one spot, which is the stronger, simpler arrangement and fine for most vans. Either way, wind it right up and check the clamp is tight before you tow.
