What jobs suit 5x40?

Mid-weight attachment: canopy and annexe corners, tie-down loops on a camper, a join where several straps meet. The 5 mm bar takes a solid pull without the bulk of the heavy rings, and the 40 mm ring still passes most webbing once it folds.

Does the round shape let my strap slip?

It does, and that is the point. The strap slides until the pull evens out, which is what you want in a bridle. It is a nuisance when you need a strap anchored at a fixed place, because it will creep around the ring under load.

Can I weld or bolt it to an alloy tray?

Bolt it through a tab rather than welding stainless to aluminium, which is a job for a specialist and usually a bad idea in a shed. Wherever the metals touch, isolate them with barrier paste or a nylon washer or the alloy corrodes around the fitting.
