As a junction. Run several light lines into it and the ring lets each settle at its own angle instead of chafing across a knot. Handy on awning guy ropes, a tarp ridge line, or spreading a bridle across a pair of anchor points.
Under a steady pull in the plane of the ring, no. Bend it across the flat, say a strap dragging the ring sideways over an edge, and light bar deforms long before it breaks. Keep the load in line and this gauge holds its shape.
Not in any way that weakens it, but expect tea-coloured staining where road salt and grime sit. The marks come off with a scrub. What actually does damage is leaving it clamped wet under a strap for months, so free it up and rinse it now and then.
