Common questions

Is #1 5/8 big enough for tie-downs on the roof rack or trailer?

For awning guys, shade cloth and light tie-downs, yes. For anything that will shock load, a swag strapped on a corrugated track or a load that shifts, go heavier. A snap gate is designed to be quick to work, not to hold a hard yank.

Where does the water do the damage?

Inside the spring housing, not on the shiny outside. Salt sits in there with no air getting to it, and that is where stainless starts to pit. Flush the gate under a tap, work it a few times while wet, and let it drain dry.

Can I splice rope straight onto the fixed eye?

Yes, and that is what the closed eye is there for: a splice or a stitched webbing loop that cannot work its way off. The trade-off is no swivel, so a rope that turns under load will build twist you have to shake out.
