Round ring or D ring, which way should I go?

The D shape gives you a straight bar to load. Webbing sits flat across it and stays put instead of bunching and sliding around a curve, which is what you want on a tie-down point or a canopy strap. A round ring lets the load wander.

How wide a strap will actually fit?

The 50 mm is the ring across, and the 8 mm bar eats into that opening from both sides, so a strap that measures a true 50 mm will not thread through. Step down a strap size, or measure the gap between the bars before ordering.

Will it mark up my alloy tray or tinnie where it sits?

Stainless bolted hard against aluminium in salt air sets up galvanic corrosion, and it is the alloy that gives way, not the ring. Bed the mount on a nylon washer or a smear of barrier paste and the join stays sound for years.
