Common questions
Eye strap or a cleat, which do I want?
An eye strap is a permanent attachment point for a shackle, snap hook or a line that stays tied. A cleat is for line you take on and off. If you are mounting a fender line, a hatch bungee or an accessory, the strap sits flatter and snags less.
Which way should the pull go?
Along the deck, not straight up. A saddle is at its best when the line runs roughly parallel to the surface it is screwed to. Pull hard at right angles and you are trying to lift both screws out of the laminate, so angle your lead or add a backing plate.
Will self-tappers do, or should I through-bolt it?
Through-bolt anything that takes a real load. Self-tappers into fibreglass hold for a while, then the hole works oval and water gets into the laminate. Bed the base on sealant either way, because a leaking screw hole does more damage over a summer than the load ever will.
