Rope and wire. The thimble is the rounded liner that stops a soft eye splice crushing or chafing where it turns, so a rope termination lasts years instead of a season. If you're clipping to a shackle or a ring, you don't need the thimble.
For a trip line or a float line, sure. For the working anchor connection, no — that's a job for a rated shackle, moused with wire. A spring-gated hook is fastening hardware and carries no published load rating, and it's the one thing you don't want letting go overnight.
Less than a plated hook, but the gate spring is still the part that stiffens. Salt crystals and sand in the pivot are the culprit, not the 316 body. A rinse in fresh water after each trip and an occasional dry lubricant keeps the gate snapping shut.
