What does universal mean in practice?
It means the mount suits rails, gunnels, coamings or a flat surface, not that one holder fits every boat. You still need to decide where it's going and check you have access to the underside, or the right rail diameter, before the drill comes out.
Will my rod sit loose in an open barrel?
Some movement is normal and even useful — an open barrel takes a range of handle diameters, which is the whole idea. If yours rattles, a wrap of self-amalgamating tape or a foam sleeve on the butt quietens it and saves the gel coat on your rod handle.
Should I buy one or a pair?
A pair, if you drift or troll. Rods want to be spread wide and angled away from each other or your lines cross on the first turn. One holder on its own is only really useful as a parking spot while you re-rig or take a photo.
