How do I know I need the rectangle cup and not the round cup?
Look at the lower unit before you pick. Kneel down and check the water intake grilles on the side of the leg: if they sit in a wide oblong plate, the rectangle cup seals over them properly. A round cup on an oblong intake leaks and starves the pump.
What can go wrong while flushing?
Running the motor without water reaching the impeller. Turn the tap on hard before you start, watch for a steady tell-tale stream, and kill the engine straight away if it stops. Run it for 2–5 minutes, out of gear, and never leave it unattended.
Do I need to flush after freshwater trips too?
Not for salt, but a rinse still helps. River and lake water carries sand, silt and weed that settles in the cooling passages, and a muddy launch loads them up the same way a sandy beach does. If you have been in shallow, dirty water, flush it.
