Can I fight a fish out of a deck-mount holder?
Don't plan on it. An upright deck holder is for storage and re-rigging — it holds the rod out of the way while you net a fish or tie a leader. Trolling from a vertical holder puts an awkward load on the base and the rod tip sits over your hull.
Where's the best place to bolt one down?
Somewhere you can reach the underside. The base bolts to a flat deck, so you want solid laminate or a floor with access below for washers and a backing plate. Tap the area first — a drummy, hollow sound means the deck is thin there and needs backing.
Will it get in the way underfoot?
It can. A low-profile base sits flush, but the barrel still stands proud of the deck and finds toes and net handles in the dark. Mount it hard against the gunnel or a bulkhead rather than out in the walking space, and you'll forget it's there.
