Frank Marine
It articulates in more than one plane, so the swivel can follow the chain as the boat swings and the anchor breaks out. A single-axis swivel binds when the pull comes from the side. That flexibility is the reason it works and the reason it needs care in use.
Not if you can avoid it, because that is the usual way these break. Bolted hard against the shank, the swivel gets side-loaded when the anchor tips on a rocky bottom. Put a short length of chain or a shackle between anchor and swivel so the pull stays in line.
Check before you trust it. A swivel is wider than the chain and it can jam in a narrow roller or refuse to feed through the gypsy on a windlass. Hand-feed the whole assembly over the bow once on the ramp rather than finding out at anchor in the dark.
