Frank Marine
Saddle on the live side, U-bolt on the dead tail, and the old line is never saddle a dead horse. Fitted backwards, the U-bolt crushes the load-bearing wire and it will part under tension. It sounds fussy until you have watched a stay let go.
More than one, always, and spaced a few rope diameters apart along the tail. A single grip is a temporary fix, not a termination. Check the wire rope maker's own guidance for the number your diameter calls for, because it changes with rope size.
No, and it is not meant to be. A grip termination holds a useful share of the rope's strength, a properly swaged eye holds more, and a hand splice sits somewhere between. Grips win on being able to undo them and redo them in the shed with a spanner.
