Frank Marine
It stops the rope or wire chewing through itself at the eye. Without a thimble the line bends tight around a shackle pin, chafes on every surge and gives up from the inside where you cannot see it. The thimble holds the eye open and spreads the bend.
Size it off your rope or wire, not off the fitting it connects to. The groove has to hold the line snugly without pinching it, and a thimble that is too big lets the eye slip out under load. No dimensions are listed here, so check before ordering.
Cast gives you a heavier, thicker section than a folded thimble, which is why it holds its shape under sustained tension instead of squashing flat. The trade-off is that cast parts crack rather than bend when badly overloaded, so do not use it as rated lifting gear.
