Stop the barrel winding itself loose. Once you've set the tension, you run the nuts up hard against each end of the body and the whole thing stays where you put it through vibration and corrugations. It's the version to pick for anything you set and forget.
Eye to the fixed point, hook to the end you want to release. Shackle the eye to your deck fitting or chainplate so it can't come adrift, and leave the hook where you can unclip it — a canopy strap, a stay you drop when you tow.
Firm, not banjo-string. Over-tensioning a stay puts load into the fitting it's bolted to, and on a boat or an annexe frame that fitting usually gives before the turnbuckle does. Take the slack out, add a bit of tension, lock the nuts and check it after the first run.
