Speed. Both ends come off without a spanner, so a canopy stay, an awning tie-down or a temporary brace can be rigged and stowed in a minute. The lock nuts mean it holds tension in between, which is what the hook-and-hook without nuts can't promise.
If the line goes slack, yes — that's the weakness of any open hook. Keep tension on it, hook onto a closed ring rather than a strap edge, and mouse the throat with seizing wire or a cable tie on anything you'd hate to have let go.
For tensioning a leg or a guy, within reason. What it will not do is hold an awning against a gust that the awning itself can't take — the fabric and the arms are your limit, not the turnbuckle. Roll it up when the weather turns.
