Common questions
Can this go below the waterline?
Treat it as an above-waterline outlet. A through hull that sits underwater needs a seacock and a proper backing block behind it, and it becomes a safety item rather than a plumbing fitting. Bilge pump, sink and deck drain outlets above the boot top are its natural home.
What stops water tracking in around the hole?
The sealant, not the flange. Drill clean, chamfer the edge, dry the hole out, then bed the fitting on a marine polyurethane and tighten it down while the sealant is still wet so it squeezes into the gap. Trim the squeeze-out once it has cured, not before.
Is stainless the right pick on an alloy hull?
Only with isolation. Stainless bolted straight through aluminium in salt water eats the alloy around the hole, and you will not see it until the hull weeps. Use an insulating gasket and sealant so the two metals never touch bare, or go with a plastic fitting instead.
