Common questions about SS316 Folding Step

What does it need to be mounted to?

Something that can take a person's full weight landing on it, not just sheet alloy or a fibreglass skin. Bolt through into a frame, a stringer or a backing plate. A step that pulls out mid-climb does it while someone is hanging off the side of a boat.

Is it slippery when wet?

Polished stainless underfoot with wet feet is exactly as slippery as it sounds. Most people add grip tape across the tread, and it is worth doing before the first wet night rather than after. If the step is the main way onto a transom or into a camper, plan for grip.

Will it fold away flat against the hull?

That is the point of it. Folded, there is nothing sticking out to catch a dock line, a jetty pile or a passing hull, which matters on a transom. The hinge needs the same rinse and lubrication as any other moving stainless part, or it will not fold when you want it to.
