More often than you think, and it changes with where you run. Weed, sand and shell get drawn against the grille and a half-blocked intake starves your pump long before it stops it. Make checking it part of the pre-start routine, not an annual job.
You can, but it needs isolating properly. Below the waterline a stainless fitting bolted straight to alloy will eat the hull around it, and that is a hole you cannot ignore. Use an isolating compound, an insulating gasket and sleeves, or have a marine fitter do it.
No, and it is not meant to. A strainer keeps out the leaves, weed and shell that would jam an impeller; silt and fine sand still pass. If you run in shallow, dirty water you still want a filter inside the line before the pump.
