Frank Marine
It holds your boat off the dock or pontoon on a sprung fibreglass pole, so wash and wind cannot push the hull into the timber. The base is the deck-mounted socket the pole sits in. If you moor alongside and come back to scuffed topsides, this is the answer.
It refers to the tube this base accepts, so measure the butt of your whip pole before ordering. Poles taper, and the diameter at the tip tells you nothing. A pole that is close but not right either will not seat or will rock in the socket and wear it oval.
A flush mount needs a flat surface and access underneath for nuts, so a jetty deck works if you can get below it. Whips load the base sideways with real leverage, so bolt through with backing plates rather than coach screwing into a plank. Screws into end grain will lift.
