Common questions about SS316 Deck Hinge

Is this for a bimini or for a hatch?

A deck hinge is the base fitting that lets a frame or a lid swing up off a flat surface, so it covers both. What it will not do is hinge two panels edge to edge; that is a butt hinge. Work out which surface the pivot needs to sit on.

Will the pivot seize up?

Stainless on stainless galls if it is left dry and gritty. Rinse the hinge when you rinse the boat, and put a smear of lanolin or waterproof grease on the pin once a season. A seized pivot usually means salt crystals, not a worn part.

Do I need to seal under the base?

Always. Anything through-bolted into a deck is a future leak and a future patch of crevice corrosion underneath. Bed the base on butyl or marine sealant, do not over-tighten, and let it squeeze out rather than starving the joint. Water under a fitting has nowhere to dry.
