Keeping the pin attached to the boat. A loose pin pulled out on a moving deck goes over the side or into the bilge, and then your bimini stays up or your hatch stays shut. The lanyard is the difference between a quick job and a ruined afternoon.
It locates. A quick release pin holds a part in position and takes shear across the pin, but it is not a rigging point and no rated load is published. Use it where you want tool-free removal, and use something fixed where a failure matters.
The release mechanism holds it in until you work it, but grit and dried salt can stop it seating fully. Flush it with fresh water, work it a few times after a dusty or salty trip, and always check it is home before you load the joint.
