A plough digs deeper in sand and mud and generally holds harder once set, but it is fussier about setting in the first place and it does not reset as willingly when the boat swings. A claw is the easier pick for short stops.
Drop it, let the boat drift back, then pay out rode before you put any load on. Once you have plenty out, reverse gently until the rope goes tight and the boat pulls up. Setting it with a short rode is why ploughs get blamed for dragging.
Ploughs are the shape most bow rollers are designed around, but check the shank length and fluke width against your roller before you buy. A plough that does not seat properly swings on the trailer and chips its own galvanising and your gelcoat.
