What do I need to add before it will record?

An SD card, as the kit does not include one. Pick a card built for continuous video writing rather than a spare out of the camera bag, because dashcam-style recording chews through ordinary cards and a failed one usually goes unnoticed until you actually need the footage.

Is the jump up from the original Vision S worth it?

If you tow in traffic, yes. 1920 x 1080 gives you enough detail to judge a car sitting in your blind spot rather than just knowing something is there. If the camera only ever gets used for backing onto a site, the older kit reverses you in fine.

Where does the sharkfin camera go, and does it need to be up high?

High on the rear wall and centred is the standard spot, and it is the right one. Mounted low you get a view of the bumper and little else. Up top, the wide angle takes in the whole lane behind and the ground close to the van.
