What does the 30mA trip rating actually protect me from?

The residual current side cuts the circuit when power leaks to earth through a damp lead, a failing appliance or a person. 30mA is the threshold, set low enough to disconnect before a shock does lasting harm. The 16A side is the separate job of overload and short circuits.

Can I install it myself?

No. It is 240V, and that is licensed electrician work in Australia. The plug-together softwire leads do make it a quick swap once a sparky is standing at the board, which is the real value here. This is built for a tidy job, not a weekend project.

Why does the remote earth wire matter?

Because the earth reference has to reach the chassis, and that is the piece people leave out when a board gets assembled from odds and ends. Having it supplied with the loom means the install goes in complete and to the standard, rather than nearly complete and untested.
